The Bayonne City Council voted to hire two new prosecutors on Wednesday.
Former Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Susan B. Gyss and former Bergen County Assistant Prosecutor Robert L. Hennessey were each hired with 10-month contracts for $32,500.

Bayonne Corporation Counsel Charles D'Amico told the council Wednesday two city attorneys that had been serving as municipal prosecutors -- Donna Russo and Susan Ferraro -- would now return to city-related business. D'Amico noted that when two staff attorneys left the city two months ago, including himself, there were just three attorneys left on the city payroll.

The contracts for Gyss and Hennessey run from Sept. 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
After 25 years, Gyss retired from the Prosecutor's Office in March 2009, and has since worked as a substitute municipal prosecutor in West New York and has done some appellate work, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said.

"She had a very successful career here. At the time she retired she was in charge of the appellate section of the Prosecutor's Office and she also has done some trial work," DeFazio said. "She is eminently qualified in the position of municipal prosecutor."

Hennessey is a former assistant prosecutor and executive director at the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

The council also appointed Rakesh J. Desai as an alternate prosecutor at a rate of $300 per court session for an annual salary of up to $12,000.
