Jersey City will pay a Boston-based lobbyists up to $32,500 in hopes of preventing a natural gas pipeline from running underground through parts of the city.

The City Council voted 8-0 yesterday to hire consultants O'Neill and Associates to help fight Spectra Energy's plan to construct a pipeline from an existing line in Linden, through Staten Island, Bayonne and Jersey City and into Manhattan.
