The city of Bayonne has finally hired a contractor who has begun making repairs to the collapsed sewer line at 45th Street and Avenue E, as reported in today's Jersey Journal. The repairs were delayed for about a year while Bayonne officials sought a low-cost option that would also minimize traffic disruptions. In the meantime, four orange barrels have guarded the spot where the collapses pipe lies 20 feet below that residents have referred to as the "Monument."
"Using traditional methods of repair would require closing Avenue E entirely for several weeks," said Steve Gallo, executive director of the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority.
Officials said the project may take about one month to complete.
