“We are not going to be pursuing charges against Mr. Sangi, but the family of the victim was advised that if they wanted to pursue misdemeanor charges… they can pursue that in Municipal Court,” Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon said today. “No indictable charges are going to be filed by our office.”

Simon added that the Prosecutor’s office had completed its investigation last week.

According to the girl’s grandmother, Sangi, who teaches U.S. and world history at BHS, smacked the girl on her butt in front of the classroom after catching her flipping a pencil, and at another time, told her she’s a “very pretty girl.”

Simon added that she sent the girl’s family and their attorney a letter, telling them of the decision.

Reached at their residence today, Sangi’s wife stated that under the advice of their attorney, they could not comment. Sangi did not return a phone call.

Officials at the Bayonne Board of Education could not be reached for comment. Sangi has been a teacher in Bayonne since September 2007 and as of March 2011 was being paid 49,845 per year, according to public records.

He had been on paid administrative leave following the complaint being reported to school officials in November.
