Four Bayonne men were among 14 people, including one alleged member of the Genovese organized crime family, who were charged yesterday in federal court in connection with an illegal online gambling operation, the U.S. Attorney’s office announced.

Reputed Genovese crime family member Joseph LaScala and the 12 members of his “LaScala Crew” were charged with racketeering conspiracy and are expected to appear in Newark federal court today, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said. Of those 12 members, three are Bayonne residents Eric “EP” Patten, 35, Mark Sanzo, 53, and Robert “Worm” Scerbo, 54.

The 14th defendant, Bayonne resident Kenneth Baran, 49, was charged with transmission of wagering information. Fishman said Patten, Sanzo and Baran are all in custody, while Scerbo remains at large.

The conspiracy charges carry a maximum prison term of 20 years and a $250,000 fine. Fishman said Baran’s transmission of wagering information charge carries a maximum two-year term and a $250,000 fine.

The men were charged in connection with Beteagle.com, a Costa Rica-hosted sports betting site. A complaint unsealed following the arrests alleges the “LaScala Crew” used the site to run an illegal gambling ring across northern New Jersey in a scheme that also involved extortion, theft, interstate transportation of stolen property and illegal gambling.

The investigation found the crew used bets made on the website to collect money from bettors in New Jersey and converted the money owed to the site into debts owed to the crew, usually with a high interest rate tacked on, Fishman alleged.

Members of the crew would then threaten and extort the bettors to collect those debts and profit off the site, he said.

The complaint also said the LaScala Crew also operated social clubs in northern New Jersey, where the club hosted and profited from illegal gaming, participated in cargo theft, and sold stolen goods while operating the gambling ring.

Local officials, environmental groups and community activists yesterday vowed to continue fighting to keep Spectra Energy from building a natural gas pipeline through parts of Hudson County, one day after federal officials gave the controversial plan their official OK.

There are only two avenues of appeal for opponents of the pipeline, which would run for about 15 miles through parts of Bayonne, Jersey City and offshore Hoboken before heading into Manhattan.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, whose five members unanimously approved the pipeline plan on Monday, can agree to rehear the case, or a federal circuit court can throw out FERC’s decision.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy has crusaded against the pipeline since it was first proposed, saying it will discourage development and lead to myriad public safety issues. Yesterday, Healy said Jersey City will try to convince FERC and the federal court that “we’re right.”

“The way the system is structured, and as it stands, is one that grants federal agencies way too much discretion,” Healy said in a statement. “It puts cities like ours at a major disadvantage.”

Spectra has said it will be one of the safest pipelines in North America, and that it will create jobs and lower energy costs for the area.

Bayonne officials have been more neutral in their comments about the pipeline. Yesterday, Mayor Mark Smith said he is opposed to the pipeline, but touted his administration’s successful effort to have Spectra redraw the route to keep it out of residential neighborhoods.

“The administration is satisfied that appropriate engineering controls are in place that will manage potential risks,” Smith said.

Pipeline opponents have been bracing for FERC’s decision since the agency released a draft environmental impact statement last September that concluded the pipeline would have few adverse impacts.

Jersey City resident Dale Hardman formed the group No Gas Pipeline in early 2010 as an effort to defeat Spectra’s proposal.

“We knew as early as that time that FERC never met a pipeline it didn’t like,” Hardman said yesterday.

NEWARK — In court today, the small-boned 80-year-old man seemed perfectly harmless. Again and again, he smiled warmly at his wife seated in the gallery, his wrinkled face appearing kind and grandfatherly behind black-rimmed glasses. And indeed, said his lawyer, defendant Joseph "Pepe" LaScala has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and simply may not have comprehended all that was happening to him.

But according to allegations set out in a 61-page complaint unsealed against LaScala and 13 other alleged Mafia-connected figures today, the old man had climbed through the ranks of New Jersey’s mob for years, eventually becoming a "made man" with the Genovese organized crime family. At one point in a complaint packed with the language of secretly taped conversations, an undercover FBI informant told authorities LaScala was introduced to him as the "godfather of New Jersey."

Today, 12 of those 14 defendants — men with alleged nicknames like "Uncle Patsy," "The Flea" and "Worm" — appeared in a Newark courtroom largely filled with their worried-looking family members and friends. While two defendants remain at large, the other 12 were arrested this week at spots around New Jersey, including their homes in Monroe, Little Egg Harbor, Wall, New Milford, Springfield and Bayonne.

The defendants showed up in federal court in an array of blue, black and gray sweat shirts and jeans, light beige jackets and red polo shirts. A few had upper bodies that rippled with muscles as scowls crossed their faces. But others had large guts and stoic expressions, and appeared to look like anyone’s next-door neighbor.

In a major federal bust, 13 of the defendants are charged with both traditional Mafia crimes — like card-game gambling, loan-sharking and theft of goods — along with what U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman calls "the new wrinkle" of using an overseas sports-betting website to run an illegal gambling operation in northern New Jersey and elsewhere. The other defendant, Ken Baran, 49, of Bayonne, was charged with transmission of wagering information.

"Today’s arrests serve as a stark reminder that traditional organized crime continues to operate in New Jersey," said Michael Ward, the head of the FBI’s Newark division, in a statement released today by Fishman’s office.

"Bookmaking, loan-sharking, cargo thefts and illegal gambling in social clubs are the staples by which organized crime funds further criminal activity," Ward added. "The use of internet gambling and off-shore locales demonstrates an evolution and increased sophistication, but the threat of force or violence to serve their purpose remains the same."

Fishman himself said, "Law enforcement will use countermeasures that are just as sophisticated (as off-shore websites and internet-fueled gambling) to bring these criminal enterprises to justice."

According to federal authorities, who cited the complaint, most of the defendants — who range in age from 35 to 80 — worked for LaScala and were "associates" or "soldiers" in the Genovese crime family of La Cosa Nostra. They allegedly operated in crews, in northern New Jersey and elsewhere.

LaScala, of Monroe, was a "capo," or captain, prosecutors allege. Starting in 2008, they said, he directed the soldiers and associates in his crew to commit crimes including theft of goods and cargo — Italian wine and high-end plasma screen televisions — as well as to engage in the receipt of stolen property in interstate commerce, extortion, illegal gambling and the collection of unlawful debt.

But a good portion of the complaint also focused on LaScala crew members allegedly working alongside unnamed people running a Costa Rica-based sports-betting website, Beteagle.com, that serviced northern New Jersey and elsewhere. According to prosecutors, high-level associates of the crew acted as "agents" of the business, charging high interest and using threats to collect debts incurred on events like pro football games.

In one secretly recorded conversation, an undercover FBI informant is talking with defendant William Bruder, 42, when Bruder advises him not to cross the mob on gambling debts, "The guys I know are serious guys, but they’re also businessmen. ... Guys I know done 20 years in jail. They’ve done everything."

The 13 defendants are charged with racketeering conspiracy, and if convicted, face maximum penalties of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, authorities said.

Baran, charged with transmission of wagering information, faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison if convicted. All but two of the defendants were given bail packages today that restrict their computer use. One defendant was detained, and one will have a detention hearing later this week.

Fleet Week will get started tomorrow with a parade of ships that will be visible from most locations along Hudson River waterfront.

The parade, called The Parade of Sail and The Military Parade of Ships will celebrate the penning of “The Star Spangeled Banner” and the War of 1812 in an event being sponsored by Operation Sail and the US Navy.

OpSail’s Parade of Sail will be first, leaving from the Verrazano Narrows Bridge at 8:10 a.m.

A total of 17 tall ships will travel north on the Hudson River, past Jersey City and Hoboken toward the George Washington Bridge.

Once the OpSail group reaches the bridge, it will turn around and head south to the Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum at Pier 86 in Manhattan.

Starting at 10 a.m., the 10-ship Military Parade of Ships will also leave from the Verrazano and travel the same route, meeting the Parade of Sail at the Intrepid.

Both groups of ships will be escorted along the river by the US Navy’s Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team, who fly two types of planes, F/A-18s and C-130s.

In April, the team conducted a low-level flight test over the Hudson in preparation for the fleet-week parade.

Parade of Sail will include ships from across the world and will be led by the third largest tall ship in the world, Juan Sebastian de Elcano from Spain.

Prime viewing will be available in locations such as Liberty State Park in Jersey City in addition to Pier A, Pier C, and Maxwell Place Park in Hoboken.

Here is the parade’s schedule for tomorrow from the Fleet Week website:

-- 8:11 a.m. - The Parade of Sail travels beneath the Verrazano Bridge.

-- 9:18 a.m. -- The Parade of Sail travels by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

-- 9:27 a.m. -- The Parade of Sail passes by the World Trade Center area of Manhattan.

-- 10:39 a.m. -- The Military Parade of Ships leaves from the Verrazano Bridge.

-- 11:22 a.m. -- The Military Parade of Sail travels past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
